Baby Buzz

It seems like there has been an endless procession of baby showers the past few months, and more are on their way. I didn't chance to get a picture of the first set of booties I churned out the night before, because lets face it, I'm a procrastinator and i didn't actually finish the booties until the day of.  The second set I had a little more time to finish it as i was a little more informed as to when it was.
I had found this cute pattern for baby booties on Etsy but I can't justify spending the $6 for something i could come up with on my own. I've only ever used one pattern and that was for the first stuffed giraffe I'd made for my precious little girl.
So how do I make them without patterns? In my head its simple and I know in translation from my brain to the page things are going to get lost but I'm going to do my best.
Imagine your building something with... Legos. everyone has played with Legos at one point in their life, be it Magablox or the tiny ones that hurt like heck when you step on them. Every stitch you lay down is like a block. laying one block on top of the other you slowly build a shape. Some blocks are shaped different to help with transition from one block to the next., some give you a different look, and some are just plain awesome.
With squares and rectangles its pretty simple. just make sure there's the same amount of stitches on each row. Now circles get a little more complicated. If your making something you want flat like say... a pot holder... Those tend to work better when they're flat. Just make sure the circle stays flat as you work your way out. It it starting to ruffle or wrinkle? your putting in too many stitches. Is it starting to look more like a hat? your putting in too few stitches. crochet tends to come apart easy so if you mess up don't stress! just pull the stitches apart and fix it!
The bottom of baby booties are more of an Oval shape. they don't need the arch support or anything like a normal shoe so a simple oval will work just fine for the sole.  Make a chain (I usually do around 6 or 7 for ones the side of the picture above) and work your way to the end like your making a rectangle. when you get to the end instead of turning and going back the other direction, put six stitches in the end and work another set of stitches into the other side of the chain. When you reach the other end do the same thing only work your stitches into the tops of the first set. then around and around we go! Now when you get to the other end don't put the six stitches. instead, when you get to those, make like your doing a circle and simply add enough to keep it flat all the way around. (So two stitches in one stitch) If it starts to wrinkle take out a few stitches (So maybe two stitches in one then only one in the next).  if it starts to roll in on its self your not putting in enough. Now in these ones i added a double stitch to the toe end to make them a little longer than the heel. To do this when you make it to your rounded edge do two half stitches in the first stitch of your half circle, then do double stitches in the rest. when you've made it all the way around to the other end of your half circle do another two half stitches before going back into your singles.
Now this way does take a little more time but once you've done it a few times it gets faster. And whats a little extra time compared to six bucks?
Well gals, i hoped this translated as well as I'd pictured. Leave a comment if you have any suggestions!
